Patricia's Protocol
- Essentials -

I have nothing to sell you but hope, and that I give you for free.

Not a cure, unfortunately, but rather a control.  This may be able to transform a terminal illness into a controlled condition, a death sentence into weekends of public service.  Beware of the other health consequences of immobility, as these could be fatal.

Alternative Treatment Protocol to Arrest the Progression of Tauopathies:
[...such as Alzheimer's disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD), Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD, corticobasal ganglionic degeneration, CBGD, corticobasal syndrome, CBS-AD), etc]
  Tauopathy Discussion Forum

PLEASE NOTE:  This list is very much out of date.  I've learned about several new things to try.  See Dale's List for more information. (7/16/2012)

[Update: 2011 09 19 Alzheimer's disease and therefore CBS-AD may be caused by spirochete bacterial infection.  See The Role of Infection and Inflammation in Neurodegenerative Diseases for more information on this topic, and more importantly, what you can do about it with natural and pharmaceutical antibiotics.]

Brand names of some supplements are provided are provided only as a reference, and does not constitute an endorsement of any particular product.

We are constantly looking for new things to try.  Therefore, the "protocol" gets modified.  I have recently cut back the number of different supplements because there were so many and my father was having trouble getting my mother to take them all.

Here are the various "cocktails" and the list of supplements used now or in previous protocols:

Gerbil-food Cocktail (Souvenaide)
Uridine (from RNA of brewer's yeast or “orotate”)
Choline (from lecithin)
Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA from fish oil)
Target:  Enhanced learning/memory

ATP Cocktail (Sinatra Solution):
CoQ10
L-carnitine
Magnesium
[D-ribose (not used due to questions about safety with CBD tau corruption)]
Target:
  Mitochondrial dysfunction

Indian Anti-oxidant Cocktail:
alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E)
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC)
Niacinamide
Target:  Mitochondrial dysfunction
[Dosage unknown.  Use "Suggested Usage" from bottles for the time being.]

Multifunctional Cocktail:
Pyruvate      - 2 gm / day
Creatine      - 1 gm / day
Niacinamide   - 1 gm / day
Target:  Mitochondrial dysfunction

B-Vitamin Trio
vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl)       - 20mg / day
vitamin B9 (folate or folic acid) - 0.8mg (= 800 mcg.) / day
vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)      - 0.5mg (= 500 mcg.) / day
Target:  ???

Cinnamon:          1000mg three times per day, for the first 6 weeks, then at least twice
per day thereafter for maintenance.  Whole Ceylon cinnamon has been
shown to be an antibiotic, and may inhibit certain strains of spirochete
bacteria. Cinnamon in capsules form prevents the degradation of the
cinnamon by saliva.  However, if exposure to spirochete bacteria in the
mouth is required, then capsules will not be effective for this purpose.

Target:  Inhibition of tau protein aggregations, disassemble
                   aggregations that have already formed; improve glucose metabolism;
lower blood cholesterol levels.  May also inhibit neurospirochetosis
                   and H.pylori infection.

Curcumin:          300-500mg 2 to 3 times per day, at least 8 hours apart, if
                   possible.
  (~12mg/lb of body weight)
Target: Amyloid beta plaques, "oxidative stress" from iron and
copper, and possibly promoting neurogenesis.  At this dosage level,
it may also "normalize" blood pressure for those with high blood
                   pressure.

                                                Curcumin w/piperine   330mg/3.5mg           Source Naturals

Piperine/Bioperine:Prevents the liver from metabolizing curcumin (and other substances)
increasing bioavailability of the curcumin.  It may interfere with
other medications and supplements, and should be used with care.

MCT/Coconut Oil:   Ideally, the dosage should be determined by testing the levels of
"ketone bodies" in the blood.  However, 1 to 3 tablespoons of a 1:1
or 4:3 MCT oil/coconut oil mixture 3 times per day, evenly spaced apart
in time, 8 hours apart, or as close to that timing as practical.  The
more active a person is, the more they probably need. Apple sauce or
refrigerated "pudding cups" work well when mixed with a small wisk.
Start out with a small amount and work up to a level that is effective,
                   but not excessive.
Target: "Chronic brain starvation" or "type 3 diabetes".  Provides
neurons with alternative to glucose for a source of energy.

See also Coconut Oil Recipes

Apple Juice:       2 cups per day.
May have a similar effect on amyloid beta plaques as curcumin (and Aricept?).

Magnesium Orotate: [quantity?] Magnesium is part of the Sinatra Solution adaptation for
                   neurodegenerative diseases.
Target:  Assist mitochondria with ATP production
                   -also-
The orotate part is said to be metabolized into uridine, which is
part of the Gerbil Food cocktail for memory enhancement [Need to check this!]

CoQ10:             100 mg 2x per day
                   Part of the Sinatra Solution
                   Target:  Assist
mitochondria with ATP production

Acetyl-L Carnitine:
Part of the Sinatra Solution
                   Target:  Assist
mitochondria with ATP production

Lecithin:          Granules.  1 Tbsp, 2x per day in food
Part of the Gerbil Food cocktail for memory enhancement
Lecithin provides choline.  It is found in eggs, or can be obtained as a
                   supplement, usually derived from soybeans.

DHA:
From fish oil [quantity?  1 tsp liquid 1x per day]
Part of the Gerbil Food cocktail for memory enhancement

Resveratrol:        Target:  General health

Garlic:             Target:  General health

Grape Seed Extract:
Target:  Inhibition of tau protein aggregations, disassemble
                    aggregations that have already formed.

Niacinamide:        500mg, 3 times per day
Target:  Inhibition of tau protein aggregations, disassemble
                    aggregations that have already formed.

Lithium:???         60mg lithium orotate per day (1/2 of a 120mg tablet)
[???? not sure about this one.  Not using it at this time.
In clinical trials using lithium to treat PSP, the study
participants dropped out due to side effects]
Target:  Prevent tau protein corruption, promoting neurogenesis.

Methylene Blue:??? 1/2 cup of methylene blue solution, 2 times per day.  One (1)
                   drop
of 2.303% methylene blue solution, measured with a
medicine dropper, added to two cups of the cinnamon tea (or
other liquid).  Adjust the concentration as necessary to
                   maintain this ratio.
Target:  Inhibition of tau protein aggregations, disassemble
                   aggregations that have already formed
May also inhibit H.pylori
infection.  Even extremely low concentration doses may improve
                   mitochondrial function and
prevent neuronal senescence.

Alpha-lipoic Acid  600mg per day (in 3 doses?)
Target: Slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease

Creatine:

Pyruvate:

***********

What we need is for people to try things and then report back their experiences.  Give it a month.  You may be astounded by the results.  You may find something or some combination that works better.  These things have worked so well for us that I just hope others will at least
give some of them a try.

If you don't try, there is no way in the world you will succeed.

Do not dismiss the medicinal qualities of foods.  Many of our drugs and medicines come from or originated in plants.  Aspirin, codeine, cocaine, nicotine, cannabis, alcohol, opium, digitalis, LSD and on and on and on all come from plants.

Plants are the original source materials for as many as 40% of the pharmaceuticals in use in the United States today. This is to say that either the drugs currently contain plant-derived materials, or synthesized materials from agents originally derived from plants. Some medicines, such as the cancer drug Taxol (from Taxus brevifolia) and the anti-malarial quinine from Cinchona pubescens and are manufactured from plants. Other medicinal agents such as pseudoephedrine originally derived from ephedra species, and menthol and methylsalicylate, originally derived from from mentha species and wintergreen (gaultheria procumbens) respectively, are now synthesized.

Used for good or for bad, there are chemicals from plants and animals
that can exert a powerful effect on the human body.
