My personal experience with using asparagus (whole) and asparagus extract for fighting urinary tract infections is positive.

The following article does not find evidence that asparagus will fight cancers, and the author thinks that there is some reason to believe that it might exacerbate "acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)" and multiple myeloma.  These particular types of cancers need the amino acid l-asparagine to survive.  The enzyme breaks down l-asparagine, and alymphoblasti leukemia is said to "respond to l-asparaginase".  This does not mean that consuming asparagus will cause these cancers, just that if you already have one of them, there is reasoning to warrant caution (but no studies have been done, and therefore, as they are fond of saying, "there is no proof").
